The first and second blog in this series on Limelight Realtime Streaming introduced the sub-second solution and explored the interactive viewer engagement capabilities. This blog will focus on technical aspects, such as scaling, redundancy, resiliency, and robustness.
To deliver to audiences wherever they are located, Limelight Realtime Streaming has an RTMP to WebRTC conversion infrastructure that is distributed globally in our CDN PoPs around the world. The initial buildout of WebRTC edges is in multiple PoPs across the Americas, EMEA and APAC.
Realtime Streaming is not just about low latency. In addition to global sub-second live video delivery; there are numerous capabilities to help you maximize the value of your live streams. First, Adaptive Bitrate streaming delivers the highest possible picture quality to each viewer, even over changing network conditions, ensuring every viewer has the best possible online experience and keeps coming back for more. Integrated content security and access control capabilities make it easy to stop unauthorized viewing of your live streams, including the ability to block access to streams by geolocation. Analytics are also available to help you understand how and where your content is being viewed and better engage your audience.
To provide redundancy and robustness, Realtime Streaming supports single or multiple bitrate RTMP ingest to two locations, with seamless failover from the primary to a backup ingest location, and automatic fail-back to the primary location. To ensure your video streams will be delivered to all viewers, several important capabilities are included. When corporate firewalls block UDP traffic, the WebRTC streams can be delivered via TCP transport. If any viewer device does not support WebRTC, the output stream will default to RTMP or HLS with ABR. If bandwidth drops and video freezes, audio will continue to play.
Realtime Streaming will be generally available in early Q4 2018.
